Out of Stock!

Today was a good day for picking up some much-needed groceries so we headed to town after our first cup of coffee. When we get an early start, we will usually stop in at Isla Cafe in Calbayog City for a quick breakfast before the grocery store opens where we can drink brewed coffee and do the WiFi thing before our order comes out. I will usually order a ham and mushroom omelet with toast and my wife will order the American Breakfast with eggs, ham, bacon and toast (no butter). Today we were served our toast but without the usual strawberry jelly (or jam as it’s known here in the Philippines). So, asked about the jelly and naturally I get the standard “Sorry Sir ‘Out of Stock’ response.” Then our waiter says “wait for a while sir,” disappears and returns with a coffee cream dispenser and says “Would you like some Honey?” I thanked him and as I picked up the dispenser I noticed it looked awfully dark. I poured it out on my toast and it was so thin it actually spread itself out.  No knife needed!  As soon as I took my first bite, I knew it wasn’t honey. The taste was very familiar but I couldn’t quite get a handle on it. So I offered a bite to my wife and after a few chews offers up her assessment “This is not honey, its pancake cake syrup!”  I took another bite and yup….Maple syrup to be exact!  I soooo wanted to ask if they had any hotcakes available, but I just quietly ate my toast and asked for my free coffee refill.  I wasn’t in the training mode today – unless I was getting paid for it, and that’s never very likely. No need to upset the mango cart today!  It’s just another day in paradise.

  1. Reminds me of our story, in Dipolog in a seafood restaurant, a waitress is describing the mouth watering shrimp special with such great details that the our whole table decides to order it. Then the waitress looks at us, and says sorry NO STOCK!!!
WTF why do you bother telling us then! lol……
    Only in the philippines…….

  2. Oh yeah! I can relate to that. Once I ordered my usual omelet breakfast. She comes back and gives me the ‘out of stock’ story. I then asked “do you have eggs?” She replied “yes.” I asked “do you have onions?” Again she replies “yes.” Then I ask “do you have ham?” and again she responds “yes.” So I ask what is the problem and she says “we have no mushrooms!” Urghhhh!
